Unit 11 - Progression

Media has always been a passion of mine. Previously I studied IT, however, I was more interested in the production and creation of media. Through my current course, I have used research and conducted interviews for my projects. I have also gained a greater understanding of the importance of communication within society. Media is a way for me to construct my ideas by bringing them to life and documenting my progress every step of the way. I'm also fond of creating media-related content such as magazines, websites and documentaries.

Throughout the numerous projects, I learned to use a variety of softwares such as photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and Adobe XD in all my productions. These are the hard skills that I am familiar with, knowing that it's very complex and it allowed me to develop my skills further. The project I enjoyed the most was dealing with mental health for young people, where I created a magazine, app, and poster. During this project, I was able to convey and portray my ideas with clear understanding to my teachers and peers when pitching my concept.

Additionally, I found it necessary to include original elements by thinking creatively and outside the box. This has challenged me. I came across an obstacle that required problem-solving, I'd say this is a skill in disguise and I had to be resilient to solve the issue. Furthermore, my course has allowed me to exceed in these areas: interviewing people, pitching my projects and receiving constructive feedback.

As I have been studying media for 3 years my future has been on my mind, consistently researching and finding that media is the future, media is global, and has so many pathways and career opportunities and I plan to gain as much experience as I can get to be very skillful.

My motivation came from my grandfather, who studied and lectured in media/journalism at Cardiff University and was remarkably successful. I share ties with the methods he used in my work by using conventions and applying knowledge from media theories, by putting them into practice. He inspires me to continue to explore media and use his work as a source of guidance. I was advised by him in my first year at college to be open-minded and find work experience which I took on board, and completed springpod in 2020 working in TV and Film.

This program consisted of learning the core values of filmmaking methods, theory, re-production process and the roles and responsibilities of working on set. Studying these key factors in the TV and Film industry was very helpful to me because I was keen to be enlightened in that area. During the program, I had seminars, virtual workshops, and real industry workers giving me and others vital advice and information about the working world. The modules based around this were cinematography, producing & directing. After I completed the work experience my perspective on the real world of media changed, it made me more aware of what is required and how I apply that in work life. This makes me want to strive to achieve the best.

My extracurricular activities have included assisting with open day events at college. My part-take in this was to inspire new media students into studying the course. In my spare time I have been exploring by creating a social media account showcasing my all creative media production.

To conclude, I hope to continue further education on this course, I have a strong foundation and am set to take on my next path of studies. I will bring hard work and dedication as a media student, knowing my hard skills and soft skills will benefit my progress for the future.

My research

Here i got some feedback from a safeguarding teacher, and from this i will be able to develop on.

Open days: Middlesex/City of London

I went to my open day event at middlesex university on saturday 19th november. I went to my course talk and accommodation tour.

I was excited to finally get to see what this course was like. I had one lecturer and current student giving me and others an insight into their course content. They do coursework which i am familiar with and they like to have a mix of practical lessons/theory lessons. The course is half and half and we get to learn the same amount of content for both. We also get taught by people who are currently working in the media industry too which I find really good. Former students gave us guidance and where they are now and it reassured me that I can be somebody in the future. I was involved in group activities where we had to pitch and sell out a topic that needs awareness me and a couple others chose the cost of living crisis - homelessness, me and 2 other people pitched it out to everyone and they agreed that it was a great debate.

Open day - City of London university
My day consisted of the subject talk, welcome to the university, accommodation talk and admissions talk which I attended.

My day there was amazing this university is my first choice now that I know what the course content is that I am familiar with in media right now, I am more confident to go forth with it. This open day was less interactive and more informative, normally I am not fond of that but they did it in a good way.

Self promotion - Instagram account

I use instagram to share my work and I like to you use it to share any type of media content inside and outside of college. My aim is to reach people who are similar to me and to grow my following. I made this account last year but only recently i have been using it to track my experiences. However right now i am thinking of concentrate on a specific type of media related content i.e making a graphic account separately since this is my photography account.

Comparison
In comparison to shamayim his freelance work is solely photography he also uses instagram and his own website to promote himself as well as being invited on podcasts and youtube interviews. All these three platforms benefit him in different ways however each method has its own specialty.

Instagram - Instagram wasn’t the first place i discovered his work however since i have been following him there he posts a variety of videos and photos, behind the scenes and development i believe he uses this platform im a great way and he has sold himself out there to other industry workers to get big opportunities.

His website - His website is linked into his instagram and on there it displays all his work. I.e his portfolio gallery, without the instagram interaction a place where he can portray his work in a website is very good.

Podcasts/interviews - Shamayim has been invited to a lot of interviews and podcasts. In the ones I have watched the questions are about how he came across photography and what motivates him, in other words he used this platform to sell himself aswell as telling people who he is and what he does in the industry. This method is good for upcoming freelancers
