Unit 9 - Social issues

Social issues documentary

07/09/22

What is a documentary?
A documentary is something factual, it consists with real stories and events being told however this can vary depending on what the documentary is based on i.e celebrities, animal species, public figures, historical events.

How do you expect a documentary to be constructed? What events often happen in a documentary?
A Documentary is constructed by a basic star,t middle and end. The events that are mostly seen in documentaries, in the beginning, is telling the background story of a subject, then develops to the middle where we find ot what the documentary is about and the end where it could leave the viewer pondering or satisfied.

Can you think of any Social Issue documentaries that you have seen?
David Attenborough's climate change - the facts is about global warming which is a social issue.

What was the purpose/theme of that Social Issue documentary?
The purpose is to reinforce the idea of what can we do to change the issue this can develop further into debates and discussions on personal beliefs and opinions.

When we watch a documentary what our expectations? What do we expect from a documentary?
Our expectations when we watch a documentary is hoping that its being told exactly the way the true event occurred

How do documentary filmmakers create the sense of ‘real’?
Having actors to reenact the events, going to real located places of the events and meeting people who were a part of the true event.

Elements of identity theory

07/09/22

There are a few main features in brand identity such as brand image, brand culture and brand personality.  Brand image is important to maintain as you are selling to the audience/viewers in the best way possible. The culture around the brand is how others portray it to be as-well as the personality. The elements broken down can be seen as the common factors occurring in logos like the colour scheme, typeface, angles/positioning and even slogans.

Colour scheme
When the colour scheme is consistent it creates an identity for itself, even when people recreate it others still recognise the logo or slogan by the original design. I.e Nike is simply black and white.

Typeface
The typeface of a logo or slogan can also create an identity for itself. When a slogan like Nike is changed and has different features such as having serif on the letters it wouldn't be as recognisable although it still says Nike, the changed logo hasn't got a statement for itself and this would effect the brand culture.

Angles/positioning
If Nike had a different positioning i.e having the Nike logo below the tick symbol, this would change how the brand image would appeal to others.

Analysis

This NHS logo still has the same features however its purpose has expanded. This logo is on an angle so it ties in with the original slogan. For any viewers looking at this, they would instantly be known that this logo is about the NHS, without the logo would typeface or colour scheme it may be difficult to know, affecting the brand personality and brand image.

Purpose of an identity
The purpose is to convey and maintain a specific image to an audience, whether it's by keeping a strong typeface or making a logo a specific colour to represent the idea this can be very impactful.

The uses of identity in a campaign
These uses could be seen in race campaigns, strikes, LGBTQ+ movements, and charity movements.

Equilibrium - Seong gi-hun owed a group of people money, he had to pay off his debts, a man sits next to him on a train while seong is stressed out, he teases him and asks him to play a game, after the game ended he gave him a "business card' advertising squid game.

Recognition - Losing the game means he would die

Disruption - finding out the game is bad

Repair - escaping and returning back to his village

New equilibrium - finding his way to pay debts

Experimental Jetset

09/09/22

I was inspired by experimental jet set however I realised that I used a serif font rather than a san-serif, the words save and help are in san-serif.  I created this in illustrator by using pathfinder so I could overlap the shape and text over each other I chose black and white so it could still fit in the theme. The circle is the danger zone which says end (end animals being endangered) I also used a compound path which created a cut between the A this was for experimental reasons.

Experimental jet set research

Experimental jet set was founded in 1997 by Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers and Danny van den Dungen. This consisted of illustrations of words and phrases. They described their work as quote-on-quote turning language into objects, it comes under the style of graphic design since the discovery of experimental jet set it has been in numerous amount of exhibitions. In 2007 their work was put up in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC which included a lot of graphical pieces, following from there, their illustrations went over to Europe and other states in America

Camera practice

12/09/22

aperture: letting light in
shutter: how wide the lens is
iso: is a measure of how sensitive the sensor is to light, lower iso less noise
higher iso more noise

this photo is also underexposed, little light is coming in

good exposure, the background is very focused

very unexposed picture

subject: plane in focus background is blurry

everything is in focus, this picture has a high iso meaning the background will be slightly grainy.

Photo experimentation

12/09/22

In this picture I used Florissant to give a nice colour overlay, this allowed the shadows to have a cooler effect.

The photo is a closeup and it focuses on a few leaves, the iso in this picture was quite high although the background is burred it has a slight grain to it.

This angle is a high angle, this makes the subject look smaller and the effect is the subject will feel
intimidated.

In this image i used low exposure to make the subject dark and it only focused on the light coming in, the angle used was low angle and it was taken from afar. this made the subject bigger and more intimidating to the viewer.

Constructivists
13/09/22

Rodchenko Constructivism
Rodchenko designed all three of these posters during the Russian revolution. He uses his own font type which is now found in adobe fonts called Rodchenko. However, he used sans serif in a bold style

I like this design because of the mix of photography and illustration. The font is at an angle like a microphone speaker, also the font is very big and stands out from the others because it's being exclaimed

This poster I also like this because of the pattern across the words, perhaps symbolising a flag.
There are shapes that are incorporated within the lettering and plane, circles triangles, and rectangles

This poster is mostly shape design, the font going across on a down slope is unique because the U and S have a white outline around them to differentiate from the grey.
Rodchenko created these posters between 1914-mid1920s
Inspired designers

Designer: Shepard Fairey, he is a street artist and is inspired by the Russian vintage posters
His aim in his constructivist work is propaganda, his work has a lot of similarities to Rodchenko, with the shapes and font style.

Designer: Paula Scher is a graphic designer her work is also similar to Rodchenko with the black and white style in photography, although the typeface isn't the same as Rodchenko it still follows the san-serif rule. I like the idea of having words from different angles.

Designer: David king was a designer, activist and visual historian.
King created this poster in the 1970s. This font style is called the German Iron font from the 1930s which still follows the rule of sans-serifs. What I like about this poster are the different heights the exclamation marks are placed at.
Constructivists poster

*13%
I created this in photoshop it was heavily inspired by Rodchenko. I found an image of a lady shouting and it was originally in colour but in constructivism they use black and white so i changed the image to black and white tones. The colours I also wanted to keep red and black which i have seen used in other posters, I also created a triangle and sent it behind a layer this was effective because it cut out around her fingers I wouldn't get this same effect in illustrator. The word "END" was distorted I tried to make it fit inside as much as i could which i think idid successfully.
One thing I would change next time is the numbers i could of had it on a slanted angle and I also forgot to ad 13* the meaning of the percentages are the numbers of endangered animals that are about to go extinct.

B-roll introduction
20/09/22

Bully documentary
They have framed each person on the side and it's at their eye level which was very good, the lighting in the documentary is sourced by natural lighting its not too bright or dark so i can tell this was recorded mid day some were filmed in a bedroom, studio and living room which i found abit unsettling, i think keeping the same background would of made it less disorganised, for the benefit of the doubt they were filming from home meaning they wouldn't have as much equipment to work with so it may have not been perfect.
The quality of the answers I think could of been better, I feel like the
answers were very repetitive and long-winded, however, all interviewees maintained good eye contact with the person they were talking to, This does change the flow of the documentary although answers were long winded the positioning of the interviewees still gives a good effect overall. This documentary isn't a re-enactment but more of a personal opinion type of documentary.

Be-you-tiful
This documentary was well put together. They framed each interviewee in the same way, the lighting was very good i can tell that they used spot lights from all directions such as filler light, key light because the background is dark they didn't use a back light on the subject this blocks out all the shadows.
The quality of the answers were high quality and diverse, answers durations were short and long, some people spoke about the fashion industry and others spoke from personal experience.
All interviewees were looking at the interviewer and maintained good eyecontact without looking at the camera.
This changes the flow because of how their are video slides (b-roll), and music.

Surrealism
What is surrealism?
Surrealism is like odd imagery you would see in your dreams mixed with real life inanimate objects. in other words this balances the two although they are completely opposite and makes them become one which is why its surreal and odd.
Why surrealism is used in campaigns?
Surrealism is used in campaigns to convey another side to why a product can be good or bad. i.e enlarging bottle of vodka and person standing in front of it with their back turned a cup could mean that alcohol is a bigger problem and they don't want to face it.

This piece of work is by Michal Batory. The image was created by a lady's lips which are shaped into being a heart, i think it my have connotations of love even with the colour red which strongly proves it has connotations to do with love. This would probably appeal to ladies, people in love or people who like the colour red.

The surreal element about this is the eyes looking at the viewer which is me, they even have eyes covering their eyes, this could be to protect their identity.
Kenzo is a designer brand for men and women, although it may not fit in with their target audience they may want to reach out to those who could be interested in this art. The positive of this is it still has a sense of their colour schemes and brand logos however the only drawbacks could be if the logo wasn't their could i know its by them.

Surrealism photography

27/09/22

Surrealism was discovered in mid 1920's during the first world war in Paris, these photos were captured with early cameras and they were mostly pictures of people and objects and the idea behind them were perceptions of sanity and reality. This new way of photography excited photographers and made them explore in new ways of creativity, it developed on from using people to replicating objects and putting them in peculiar way artists such as Claude Cahun and Angus Mcbean they used props, painting and mirrors to portray things to not being real life.

Surrealism poster

27/09/22

I created this using photoshop in adobe. I had a concept of a child standing on an apple picking toys off a tree which fits into surrealism. The background is a thunderstorm a place where a child shouldn’t be, the tree is a png placed from a distance away from the other tree in the background. The tool I used was a magic wand and masking the magic wand allowed me to select the subject as accurately as possible, and was very easy to achieve. next time I could go into detail and remove little white areas like in the doll I could use a magic wand tool or inverse it. The outcome could have been better in my opinion, but it was very difficult to think like a surrealist.

Adbusters

This poster is a adbuster poster that focus on public opinions vs companies, they tend to advertise in bus stop shells. My personal response was influenced by an article I searched up and the report said America needs to break habits and stop being so solace & sedative in these issues rather than glamorising them. Other sources say that adbuster is absolutely capitalist which I don't support.

Brandalism

In this poster they are influencing people to walk instead of taking public transport, their aims are to make people healthier as well as the environment. I can see why some people may be offended but not everyone will be. I believe brandalism aim isn't to offend but to touch on subjects that need to be spoken on which I think is good in my opinion.

Tibor Kalman

Tibor Kalman was an influential controversial graphic designer who focused on advertisements such as AIDS, racism & violence in this case this advertisement is about racism and how we all have the same heart whether we are black white or yellow. I personally think this message has been put across well and is very strong because they used real hearts as an emphasis on the social matter. I like that they touch on subjects that seem to be taboo in society it brings these subjects into the light.

Led by donkeys

Led by the donkey a socialist group that is anti-Brexit. Their way of communicating their opinions is by tweets on a platform called Twitter. They don't support the government and what they "try to do for the country". In my opinion, Twitter is a great place to share political views and find an audience that is alike or has the same beliefs. I wasn't aware that there were groups like this but I do support what they do.

///

In this image I created it by using photoshop, the purpose of this image is to have slime/germs in the hand sanitiser with googly eyes coming out
////

In this image I also used photoshop but I had imagery in mind that I wanted to recreate jack on the beans stalk, I masked out an image by using the magic wand tool and then put it in an accurate position and added an overlay by having a rectangle on top and using that layer to edit the hue of the image this effect makes the picture look old which was what I was aiming for.

Vox pop

I created this vox pop in premiere pro. I've used sound effects from freesound and canva for the effective questions, I also used another website for b-rolls which made the video more interesting rather than just having interviews just put together. I had some trial and error with sound fading in and out on mac but now I'm more familiar with it. What I could do better next time is to have more interviews.

Social campaign project

Campaign pitch

Purpose/objective

The objectives are to go around intuition making awareness about knife crimes and the dangers of it and showing them my documentary about someone's life compared to their morals.

Key message
reinforcing the dangers of being on the streets and that there's more to life.

Target audience
Preferably 16-25, I believe it could be younger since nowadays 14/15-year-old statistics possession of a weapon is getting higher.

concept/essence of your approach/feel of the campaign

Having a group of young people come together to push this campaign out at our target audience in addition to talking at institutions and workshops, we want youths to read about our workshop and want to participate, we also want to talk at institutions to have an effect on students.
Background
Knife crime has always been a topic of discussion in the last 10 years, however, every time news articles talk about the conflicts it gets less and less desensitised and only allows grief to have a platform even though the full stories lay behind music videos.

Products/plan
Educational 10 - 15 min documentary: inviting a person in to talk about their experience and their upbringing and why they encounter life on the streets. In addition to this I will be creating a badge and leaflet or poster

Why do i think it would be successful?
I think this would be successful because not only that we are encouraging young people to put down knives we want to leave a long term effect of what they can take away from our documentary.

Posters: advertising the badge

?Leaflets: Giving advice/information about knife crime - requires primary/ secondary research

Graphic: social media banner, a badge, t-shirt design

1)This genre is biographic/autographic
2)This documentary has unstaged footage, ad it can be seen as informative and educational.
3) performative
4) one area this student could have improved would be typeface colours so that are legible.

Analyising poster & photographic poster

colour - The colour in this poster is very bland because the main subject is the knife with the blood

typography - Typography comes off very strong with the black since it doesn't clash with the neutral

photography - I can see that the background picture was taken in a field this gives the subject empty space to be the main focus point.

In my opinion I don't think this poster is effective enough although its in an empty space the background makes the knife look misplaced. additionally it doesn't give much information about the poster

colour - The colour in this poster is bland however red is made a symbol here.

typography - Typography is a bit hard to read since the background is light and the typeface is light, the colour would be better if the typeface was darker

shape - The background used for the title is quite unique, it seems to me that its blood splatter but in white which works really well with the red typefaces

photography - The knife in this image is dominant, the shadow effect gives it depth rather than having a floating knife.

In my opinion i really like this poster, i like this poster because the text is very informative, the shadow effect i'm very fond of and also the cool shape for the title which could of easily been left as normal.

Graphic

Colour scheme - the colour scheme is black, white and red which are very strong colours.

Type - the typeface is cut out into lines and represents what's been said. its also clear to read the white on black and black on white font.

Imagery - there is an illustration of a knife and world symbolising to end of knife crime all around the world

In my opinion this logo is very straight to the point which is good seen in the phrase "cut it out" but it could do with more colour and the title knife crime could be slightly bigger. all in all the message still gets across because of the knife going through the circle as a stop sign.

Colour scheme - the colour scheme is friendly and suits the aesthetic.

Type - the typeface is black and bold and stands out from the rest, this is to convey the message to others.

Imagery - there is an illustration of a knife and world symbolising to end of knife crime all around the world

In my opinion I'm very inspired by this badge from the colour scheme to the message they've covered it all, I also like how the V is the end of the knife the word in "liVes" it put an emphasis on it.

All Production

Documentary production
Case study: Focusing on a black male's story of his upbringing in London, talking about how they were attacked and their view on knife crime including money, friendship, and postcode wars.

Convention - About the real! (Historical political

and cultural etc events)

Genre : crime

Studio Set up
I decided to set up the studio this way because I want my subject to have good lighting on the face rather than the lighting being behind them, casting a shadow on camera, Also I've chosen this background because I have analysed documentaries that tend to use black background or a comfort space (home/room).

Skills and experimentation

Notes
Having Viewer discretion at the start/ This documentary contains coarse language and content that may disturb Some viewers

Remembering to add credits at the end

Experimentation trial
In this trial I was experimenting with angles that include, close up, low angles and b-rolls of the area I am focusing on this experimentation just to see how I want to do the real thing.

Audio
The audio of my subject i had to alter to sound louder than my soundtrack, I did this by raising up the audio gain up to 19, also making sure the sound isn’t too loud by checking if the bar hits red which it didn’t meaning it was okay.

B-roll
I have captured various types of b-roll footage and found ones on the internet as well as Images of the subject's childhood. I recorded b-roll footage on iPhone Xs max and 13 pro max in the relevant area. Some b-rolls I recorded like a pan i.e the train b-roll and police car b-roll. Others were surrounding that I didn’t have to move but the actual surroundings had movement in them. I liked this because it created a sense of realness and this effect would get viewers engaged. It was an important factor to include in my documentary since it helps build on the documentary story such as the childhood pictures, I found that without that image it was very bland and may leave the viewer uninterested.

Voice over
I have recently recorded voice overs for some stills, After analysing some similar documentary pieces to mine i found that having a voiceover carries an element of directing, so I experimented in the studio and readout headings of stills and spoke upon other stats. The tone of my voice I wanted to keep it very monotoned since this is a serious topic.
The equipment I used was just a voice recorder, From past projects, I found that using a microphone close up doesn’t give as much clarity as using the voice recorder mic hence why i decided to do so because key things really boast the overall look.

soundtracks
I found soundtracks that are copyright-free off youtube, understanding the consequences if I went ahead and used a non-copyright-free track without crediting. I went with a theme that suited my documentary I have 2 different soundtracks, one for the opening and one during a topic talk. The opening one is effective because it’s dramatic and emphasises that this documentary is serious, I used exponential fade at the end which smoothed into the subject and title Perfectly. The second soundtrack i used was a drill beat later on in the documentary, as I edited it in i realised the soundtrack really enhanced everything else, the music already had a fade in which was brilliant and has beats where I can add b-rolls in.

Text Placement / image placement
The placement of text and images was a vital part of this production. I learned to use keyframing on b-roll images so it can move up and zoom into the screen. In addition to that placement of text some are in the middle of the screen and lower thirds. Examples I have used this in: the title is in the middle of the screen this is because titles are made to be visible. Viewer message: Also in the middle of the screen, since they normally do this in TV shows, sometimes it’s in bold font

Video recording
I have experimented with different angles, such as close ups and low angles and kept my subject the frame appropriately and something that matched with conventions of b-roll.

I included my recording i done from home, this was me looking at resources i found. I recorded this from my personal camera which is a Nikon D3200.

Including credits is important to have the sources, it shows that its legitimate

In my notes I wanted to display that this documentary may contain things that could disturb viewers

I wanted to make this clip fit in frame correctly. I came across an issue with the video and audio coming in together. I had to zoom in, i didn't loose quality because i exported in was high.

This is something new I tried and I achieved this by scaling and positioning it in a different way so it looks as if the interviewee's looking.

This is the changed title and it is more focused on an aspect of knife crime which is drill and culture.

Questions to ask my interviewee

These are the questions I plan to ask my interviewer and a local police

Storyboard (deviated)

This is a rough plan of how i would like my documentary to be like. Since i have started recording things are in different order and i have experimented away from this plan, topics are still the same, and i have experimented getting different b-rolls by recording the real location and using b-rolls on artgrid. other things have been altered.

Graphic badge / social media header production

This is a few sketches of what i plan to do for my badge and poster, i have a few sketches on the design. the final badge design is displayed in the bottom right, this will include the campaign name, the map of london and my original knife imagery with blood.

original image
partly edited
fully filled with colour
I traced the path of the map of London and filled it in with a dark blue and a light green so its contrasting and stands out

Using a punchy title to make it stand out i used white font, I also decided that i wanted the font to curve inside the map. this reduces space and allows me to add other elements rather than putting the font in the middle.

I simply removed the background by quick selecting the knife, inversed made a mask and used the eraser tool to take the background away

I decided to change the font since the other one was very rounded previously.

I made a social media banner using illustrator, the dimensions are catered for twitter. I incorporated my London badge and included information since the ones i analysed didn’t have any i thought it was vital to include.
Original photography of my badge

Campaign twitter mock up, using photoshop to edit things that are needed to make it look like a real campaign.

Poster advertisement production

Trial and error:
however for the poster i may be advertising the badge since my documentary has a message to stop knife crime in itself i will be changing the purpose of it to becoming a photo graphic poster

This is my photographic poster that i created in photoshop, i incorporated my knife in the background using the magic wand tool. making inverting and rubbing away bit that are not needed. I changed the opacity to a level that my target audience could still see but making the focus point the badge. I edited my badge picture to be circular.

Primary and Secondary research

Primary research

Vox pop - Gathering information from my vox pop all participants agreed that there's not enough being done. Everyone touched on different factors that contribute such as upbringing, not being taught in school, the influence of music videos that rap about money violence and other horrific themes.

Talking to police - In my college, I have managed to crack down and find an authority to talk to about knife crime. I interviewed him personally and asked him a couple questions such as

I have reached out to external reporters that i was keen on asking questions to, They gave me somewhat guidance that will benefit my secondary research but i am still wanting primary

Secondary research
Remembering that having viewer digression, and content may disturb some viewers since it's a sensitive topic.

I did some general research and the specific area related to the documentary

Convention - About the real! (Historical Political

and cultural etc events)

Genre : Crime

External research

Although I reached out to external resources and still got secondary information it was a good practice of researching data, the websites listed were very helpful however reading the file attached ( removal of drill videos) gave me guidance for my voice-overs.

Northwest London

Northwest london is in the top 20 safest places but is heading down the list as of 2021 in london with a rate of 82 crrimes per 1000 people

crime rate of antisocial behaviour is 8% more dangerous in possessions of weapons. compared to central london its 13% more dangerous in drugs, 5% more in weapons 8% more in anti social behaviour

Focus area Northolt, Ealing

https://crystalroof.co.uk/report/postcode/UB59SP/crime

According crystalroof Northolt Ealing crime rate average is 5/10. The 2 most important factors make it to the top 4, drug dealing and anti-social behaviour, Possession of weapons being 12th and stealing 14th at the bottom of the list meaning it is improving and campaigns need to carry on doing their part. But from these stats I can see that the biggest factor is drug dealing.

Analysing infographics

09/11/22

This infographic is for crime and punishment rates in different countries regarding prison treatment. They make statistics look more appealing and interesting by using colours, charts, maps and symbols. This magazine has used Maps with yellow circles, showing the area/population, the colour is very contrasting against the blue it showing that it's important. The bar chart is very clear to see information that is higher or lower than each other because of the bold typeface used. Lastly, they have used symbols effectively to convey a statistic i.e 1 in 7 this is an infographic because instead of illustrating it they use visuals.

How could you use infographics in your campaign?
For my documentary, I will be looking into using people diagrams and moving bar charts by using after effects meaning it will be animated

CHANGE OF APPROACH & new research

Social issue – Graphics evaluation

My social issue campaign is about raising more awareness of knife crime in London, my target audience being 16 and over. Compared to other campaigns I've looked at I have seen different approaches and purposes; this made me think of what my purpose could be. How can I make this successful? After analysing and researching I hadn't seen much graphical content for knife crime. I was inspired by Lives not Knives, I liked how they are empowering children, youth and young people into seeing a better light and even teaching them to have campaigning skills and my campaign were real it would carry out the same purposes however it posed a question of how I can make my campaign successful by following a criteria to create a good product

I created a badge, social media header and a poster by using a variety of tools in adobe illustrator, new tools I've explored were image tracing the original image of the map and getting a sketch to create my own original work. I selected the original map and used the magic wand tool, this allowed me to create a path. I created a new layer and hid the map

So, I was left with the trace which I could select places that illustrator created and filled in with my own colours.

The research/analysis I done, supported my identity and elements to including opportunities for young people, advertising my badge, marketing my social media campaign

My stop knife crime badge I experimented with colour schemes and what worked best with the shades of green and blue some looked stale, until I found the right shades colour schemes on products are important because for a campaign to sell this out the audience needs to find it suitable and eye-catching to wear. I came across a few difficulties with the process of creating my graphical content the first difficulty I came across was making my badge circular I made another layer and sent the original image to the back; I created a compound path to achieve this.  Through this I successfully created a badge that I would be happy to represent for my campaign I believe it carries a strong message overall.

My social media header I created needed specific dimensions before I could start. Looking at my plan I followed it by including my logo in the top corner. The typeface I used I wanted to it to be bold and punchy for the connotation of urgency Aswell as having a short slogan “together we change” emphasises the connotation. A difficulty I stumbled upon was having a red background with black text or white. Since the red was dark and the black was dark it was appropriate to use white and it contrasted very well.

The purpose of each product is spreading the word and getting it out there. A badge is a symbol of support. Social media & posters are reaching out to hundreds and thousands of people.

The product that communicates my message are the badge and social media twitter mock up. The badge I believe it to hold a strong message and if it were a real campaign, I think it would be a very effective way of supporting the campaign. All 3 products I created graphically go together very well each holding a very strong part to play in my social campaign. This campaign specifically wants the audience to engage in their activities such as talks, protests and debates. This description is on the poster to get young people involved.

I decided to used twitter as a social media platform because it is best suited for campaigns and young people, In addition to that twitter is very controversial and engaging for these topics. Engagement is key for pushing out campaigns.

Although my graphical content successfully portrayed my views, there were things I had difficulties with was designing my poster and how I could incorporate my original imagery into it. This led me to having a couple designs and experimenting to see what turned out best. My idea was to make my poster only graphical However it turned out to be informative and I included more information about my campaign on it too.

if i could improve my work id like to include more original photos and experiment with different layouts and schemes.

Overall, I think the most successful part of my campaign would be twitter mock-up this is because I was able to portray my work as if it were a real campaign, I saw it as an extra step. Generally, mock-ups would be used to see how a finished product would look and I was satisfied.

 Social issue - documentary evaluation

In this project I created a documentary on the influences of knife crime, focus point: Music, the aim of this documentary is to raise awareness of the psychological effects of music lyrics, potentially leading to harm in theory. This documentary is directed young people in education and out of education. I decided to make my target audience young people because this is where the problem is effecting the most and unfortunately the youngest age being 13 would need to be made aware. The aim is making a change of what young people listen to and how it influences them in ways they cannot see. My project consisted of are 2 interviews with opposing viewpoints on what the music genre Drill is to them. In addition to that, they both speak on their upbringings, we see how those effects their lifestyle.

I created my documentary using premiere pro compared to other projects I hadn’t explored much with graphic effect controls I.e. movement of text. This is something new I've learnt and using this added movement to my documentary as well as using lower thirds, normal tools I used to trim and cutting. A major part of my documentary was finding other sources to incorporate within my work. I had a sustainable amount of original b-roll footage however I had to use sources when I was editing my second interviewee.

The genre of this documentary is crime and the conventions I used were traditional. Unstaged footage and informative, developing upon this, the atmosphere I wanted to create for my documentary was it to be interview-based with b-rolls such as hand-held footage supporting the idea of realism in my film. I believe I successfully used this convention in an appropriate manner by recording areas of my interviewees. The location being West London.

The positive I got out of this was I learnt that even outside of the UK is worser than the shocking news stories on BBC news or the ones that don’t reach main stream. My second interviewer was very informative on this topic and I found out things I hadn’t known before.

The last lesson I have learned from this project is that my plan doesn’t have to be perfect even though I class myself as a student that completes work to the best of my ability and try to plan things as clear as possible. It made me realise that even though I may not have a back-up plan the approach can be changed with the support of peers.

Northwest London research

My research strategies were primary and secondary this. I used more primary research for Northwest London and secondary for Brazil.

The first method I used for research this area was the overall stats of crimes to get a gust of how I understand deeper roots of this topic. This led me onto pondering and searching round for primary research I emailed a local reporter to help me with some questions I had, and the document attached about removal of drill music from YouTube made me think there’s a bigger problem in this sector and it outweighs the other topics I had. planned to talk about. I looked at music videos and articles which were quite sensitive.

Even though I know things from my own research outside of college I.e social media sharing articles about this topic I still didn’t understand why this was happening and this is where I had to look at authority and statistics. This benefited me more in my b-rolls since I am not voicing myself in this documentary because my documentary didn’t follow that convention instead, I articulated information in my own words showing my research through that way.

Brazil Research

My Brazil research was through my second interviewee, from the information I found out I was keen to find out more and I was surprised with the sources I came across and it made me realise that knife crime/gang violence is a big social problem.

There were problems I overcame while editing by using moving effects by key framing my text so it adds dramatical elements to my documentary, I got this convention from analysing other documentaries. Another problem I had cropping out text which was far up on the screen this was a sourced b-roll meaning I had to experiment with the video effects cropping out text, which was very high up on the screen, it was possible that I could lose video quality

My plan deviated due to my first interviewer unexpectedly taking time off college which made me very tense and quite devastated  my original plan was to make a documentary solely on their upbringing and their knowledge about the streets of London and I was very dedicated to sticking to this plan and they were taking time out of their day to come and record. I got half of my recording done however it wasn’t solid I found while I was editing it was quite bland and not engaging. The only solid recording was the topic of music. This left me in vulnerable position and I had to think smart and fast and most importantly how could I make this quality content. I decided to change my approach knowing that my focus point is just Northwest London I interviewed another person with a different cultural background but living in London to give their outlook on their culture versus London culture.

In terms of how well I articulated myself in the documentary, I would say there's room for improvement, my plan deviating allowed me to be less restricted with recording. On the other hand with editing, aspects like allowing more time to read text, leaving stills on the screen – feedback could be changed. My research clearly Convey's that I understood my topic however I didn’t incorporate enough into my documentary to portray that I did include information but personally if I had more time I would like to add more on. This would have enhanced the informative side of my documentary.

Although it wasn’t what I wanted, I believe the documentary is more engaging than It would of initially turned out. I am positive that I learned a lesson to take away from this for future purposes and that to me is what’s most important, I have successfully improved my adaptability, problem solving and time keeping.

If I had the chance to do this project again, I would focus on one topic that they can talk on strongly. I've realised while recording my first interviewee's they spoke on 3-5 topics briefly, but music was very strong and I had a lot of recording to edit with, linking back to being restricted, allowing my interviewees to talk on a topic they feel confident about brings the passion out of it rather than talking on many topics can be daunting and puts pressure on the interviewer and the product may not be to best quality. I saw that the interviewer was more engaged when talking on this topic because it comes from something they are familiar with and this would strongly link back to my “aim” of the psychological effects of drill music.
